The Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGHA) made a remarkable debut at this year’s Akwaaba African Travel Market, held from 14–16 September at the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos. For the first time in the Union’s history, TOUGHA participated with its own exhibition booth, showcasing the vibrancy of Ghana’s tourism offerings to a wide audience of African and international travel professionals.

Leading the delegation was TOUGHA President, Yvonne Donkor, who described the Union’s maiden exhibition at Akwaaba as “a milestone moment” for Ghanaian tour operators.
“This is the first time TOUGHA has set up its own booth at the Akwaaba Travel Market, and we see it as a very important step in strengthening our presence in the sub-region,” Donkor said. “Ghana is blessed with rich culture, heritage and hospitality, and we came here to showcase that to our brothers and sisters across Africa as well as the global travel community.”
The TOUGHA booth drew significant attention from industry players, with members engaging travel agents, airlines, and tour companies on potential collaborations. The Union also used the platform to highlight Ghana’s festivals, heritage tourism, and leisure attractions, while positioning the country as a preferred destination for African American heritage travellers.

According to Donkor, the Akwaaba Travel Market offered TOUGHA members not only visibility but also the chance to forge meaningful partnerships. “It was a space for learning, networking and sharing ideas. The enthusiasm we experienced here confirms that Ghana remains one of Africa’s top tourism destinations. We are proud that TOUGHA is playing its part in flying the flag high,” she added.
Now in its 21st edition, Akwaaba African Travel Market has grown into one of the largest travel expos in West Africa, attracting exhibitors and participants from across the continent and beyond. TOUGHA’s participation this year marks a new chapter in Ghana’s tourism promotion efforts in regional markets.
